Parkviews: Pirates: Paradoxes and Perils – 8 NOVEMBER
JOIN US ON THURSDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2018 AT 6PM. ST FRANCIS PARKVIEW.
Piracy is a crime that captures the imagination like almost no other.
In the past decade it leapt from being a topic of interest to historians,
movie-makers and a few maritime officials, to one of the greatest
global threats to peace and security. In 2011 South Africa became the
only African country to mount a counter-piracy patrol, in the
Mozambique Channel. Recently the threat and risk of falling victim
has declined to such an extent off the coast of Somalia that many
people discuss the end of piracy. Yet how much can we be sure of,
especially once we dive beyond the headlines and deep down to
discover some startling and often untold stories – many of which show
the stark difference between what we imagine and what is actually
occurring on the High Seas.
