This week’s prayer cycle asks us to pray for Oyo-Ibadan, Nigeria and the Rt Revd Williams Oluwarotimi.
I’ve used the Anglican Communion and the Anglican Communion News Service websites for some of the info here. They have plenty of info concerning Anglicans all over the world. Please browse those sites when you have time. Links to them are available on our Recommended page, along with several other interesting links.
The Anglican Communion website gives the full name of the Bishop of Oyo as The Rt Revd Williams Oluwarotimi Aladekugbe.
Ibadan
Ibadan is the capital city of Oyo State in Nigeria. [You can click on the map to zoom in to these place names.] Ibadan has a population of about 3.2 million and is Nigeria’s 3rd largest metropolitan area by population (after Lagos and Kano). It is also the largest metropolitan area by geographical area (about 3,000 km2). At the time of Nigeria’s independence (1 Oct 1963) Ibadan was the most populace city in Nigeria and the 3rd in Africa (after Cairo and Johannesburg).
Ibadan is located in south-western Nigeria, 128 km inland northeast of Lagos and 530 km southwest of Abuja (the federal capital). It is a prominent transit point between the coastal region and the areas to the north. It had been the centre of administration of the old Western Region since the days of the British colonial rule, and parts of the city’s ancient protective walls still stand to this day.
Ibadan has existed since 1829. It became a British Protectorate in 1893. The first university in Nigeria was the University of Ibadan, first as a college of the University of London (1948) and later (1962) as an autonomous university. It is regarded as one of the premier educational institutions in Africa.
The city is a major centre for trade in cassava, cocoa, cotton, timber, rubber, and palm oil. The main industries in the area include the processing of agricultural products, flour-milling, leather-working, furniture-making, tobacco processing and the manufacture of cigarettes. There is abundance of clay, kaolin and aquamarine in its environs, and there are several cattle ranches, a dairy farm as well as a commercial abattoir in Ibadan.
