Church Unusual: Sunday 1 November 2020

My dear Franciscans

At the 8:30 service on Sunday, we will celebrate All Saints Day and the Commemoration of the Faithful Departed (also known as All Souls Day).

All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day have been observed for much of the Church’s history. On All Saints’ Day we remember all those who have been officially named as Saints by the church – like St Peter, St Paul, St Francis – and the countless Christians (saints) who have gone before us.

Then on All Souls’ Day (the following day) we remember ‘The Faithful Departed’.  This is a family-oriented day when we commemorate loved ones who have passed.  On Sunday we will remember them in the reading of their names and the lighting of candles and remind ourselves that they are still part of us, and that beyond our horizons, beyond our boundaries, beyond our understanding, they are held in God’s embrace.

It is not too late to send names in to the church, please make sure we have received them by 12:00 noon on Saturday. These will be read out in the service on Sunday.

With love and hope

Paul
